Mega Mid-Size SUV Comparo

Hyundai Creta VS Jeep Compass VS KIA Seltos VS Mahindra Bolero VS Mahindra Scorpio VS Mahindra XUV500 VS MG Hector VS Nissan Kicks VS Renault Duster VS Tata Harrier

1. Hyundai Creta - While its Bold design may not be to everyone's taste, the all-new Creta's cabin is definitely a nice place to be in. It's feature-rich across the board & has 5 engine-gearbox options. The 1.5 petrol is suitable for most, the refined 1.5 Diesels excels on the highway, while the 1.4 turbo-petrol is the enthusiast's pick.

Jeep Compass

Jeeps's refreshed made-in-india SUV still comes across as a made-for-india SUV. It's built tough, offers brilliant ride quality, a punchy diesel (now with a smooth auto option), sorted handling, & has genuine off-road ability. It appears pricey for its size but few rivals have the same depth of engineering.

FOR - Ride & Handling, tough build.
AGAINST - Average Fuel Economy (Petrol)

KIA Seltos

Kia's 1st Model for India has hit the nail on the head. The Mid-Size SUV is quite attractive, the interior is well-finished & equipment on offer is class-leading. The trio engines (each available with manual & auto gearboxes) also impress. The 1.5 petrol is pleasant & best when paired with the CVT, the 1.5 Diesel is frugal & refined while the 1.4 turbo-petrol is good enough.

FOR - Excellent Quality & refinement.
AGAINST - No paddleshifters on 1.4 DCT.

Mahindra Bolero

Rugged, reliable & cheap to run as it is, the Bolero is a sales sensation in Rural India. Updates to comply with latest safety & emission standards also means there's a lot more life in Mahindra's best-seller. However, the Bolero still feels crude & falls short across parameters of interest for urban buyers.

FOR - Feels Unbreakable & torquey engine.
AGAINST - Crude & not too spacious.
VERDICT - Great if you want a rugged work-horse that's one
step above a pure utility vehicle.

Mahindra Scorpio

It is getting a bit long in a tooth now but it remains a consistent seller for Mahindra. That hardy nature is central to its appeal while the Diesel engine impresses for refinement & zing. It's not the last word in ride & handling & there are roomier SUVs for the money, but you can't go wrong with a Scorpio.

FOR - Refined engine & equipment.
AGAINST - Driving dynamics not perfect & poor ergonomics.
VERDICT - Tough SUV that works as everyday transport.

Mahindra XUV500

With the next-gen expected in 2021, the current model soldiers on. Mahindra has updated the SUV over the years with facelifts, power upgrades & feature additions. The macho styling, roomy cabin, 7-seat flexibility & torquey engine hold the XUV500 in good stead but the package still lacks finesse.

FOR - Equipment, flexibility or 7 seats.
AGAINST - Inconsistent quality & crude manual
                                                                                              gearbox.
VERDICT -  Far from Perfect but still has its appeal.

Kerb Weight - 1785 kg
Fuel Tank - 70 Ltrs

MG Hector

MG has updated it's 1st offering for our market is with more equipment larger than anything in its segment & comes with equipment not ever seen before either. Its aggressive pricing, strong diesel engine, massive interior room & bevy of connectivity & convenience features do give its rivals sleepless nights though we wish overall ride quality & handling were better & the petrol engine had more oomph.

FOR - Space,comfort & unmatched equipment.
AGAINST - Doesn't feels as well-engineered as rivals,
petrol could do with more punch.

Nissan Kicks

Nissan's Mid-Size SUV is now a petrol-only model. The range starts with a 106 hp, 1.5Litre but the new 156hp, 1.3Ltr Turbocharged unit is the star of the package. As before the kicks stand out for its rugged feel. The cabin is inviting too, but there are some ergonomic glitches & space is down on rivals.

FOR - Feels rugged & performance (1.3)
AGAINST - No diesel option & not roomy as rivals.
                                                                VERDICT - A powerful, funky & unique Mid-Size SUV.

Ground Clearance - 210mm
Kerb Weight - 1295-1387 kg
Fuel Tank - 50 Ltrs

Renault Duster

The Duster now gets a 1.5 petrol & a 1.3 Turbo-petrol engine. Performance on the latteris good, even with CVT option, but there's no denying the Duster feels its age despite a slightly plusher cabin & more kit. Ride quality is still superb.

FOR - Excellent ride quality, value & performance (1.3)
AGAINST - Cabin Doesn't feel premium.
VERDICT -  Not as polished as rivals but still rugged
                                                                                                & likeable.

Tata Harrier
Concept Car looks, a roomy cabin & rugged build are things that interest in the Tata Harrier. It's not perfect ergonomics are off & refinement isn't the best. 2020 versions get added features & the all-important auto' box.

FOR - Spacious, Premium interiors, ride quality & striking
design.
AGAINST - NVH
VERDICT - Probably the best Tata SUV yet.
