Upcoming Volkswagen Cars in India

Volkswagen currently has cars like the Polo and Vento in India. Two other cars that are CBU units on sale are the T-Roc and the Tiguan AllSpace. Both are really good cars in their own right but are not helping in sales for the OEM. In this story we are going to take a look at the upcoming Volkswagen cars in India.

New Gen Volkswagen Vento

The Volkswagen Vento is one of the upcoming Volkswagen cars and is expected to be the replacement of the brand’s currently sold, Vento. Based on the VW’s new modular platform, MQB-A0-IN, this car might be considerably bigger than the Vento.

Under the hood, VW offers Vento with two petrol engine options in the international markets. The first is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder MSI engine producing 117hp and 162Nm. The other option is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol TSI engine that churns out 128hp and 200Nm. Both engines are available with six-speed automatic gearboxes, though in select markets the 1.6-litre is also available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The model for India is likely to get the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which works on the current Volkswagen Vento and churns out 110hp. While the sedan is expected to be larger than the outgoing Vento, it will continue to rival the Honda City, the Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Ciaz in India.

Expected Prices - ₹ 10-15 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom)
Rivals - Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Nexa Ciaz, Skoda Rapid & Toyota Yaris.

Volkswagen Taigun

The VW Taigun will be German carmaker’s entrant to the mid-size SUV segment in India. The SUV will share the MQB-A0-IN platform with its sister model, the Skoda Kushaq. The Taigun will come packed with features in order to increase its appeal to buyers. The top-spec model will come with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the My Volkswagen connect app (to access the connected car features). Another major feature on the inside will be the digital instrument cluster (Virtual Cockpit), something its sibling misses.

As the launch of the VW Taigun is set to take place in the coming months, it will be positioned in the mid-size SUV segment, which is becoming the hottest segment in terms of demand in India. Taigun will go up against the Skoda Kushaq, Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and MG Hector.

Expected Prices - ₹11-19.5 Lakhs
Rivals - Hyundai CRETA, Kia Seltos, Mahindra XUV500, Maruti Suzuki Nexa S-Cross, MG Hector, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster & Skoda Kushaq.

New Gen Volkswagen Polo

The Volkswagen Polo may have persisted in its current appearance for over a decade in the Indian market, however, the hatchback could be in for a major update. The new-gen Polo is currently under evaluation by Volkswagen.

The outgoing model of this hatchback is priced at Rs 6.17-10.00 lakh, with rivals like the Maruti Baleno coming in at Rs 5.90-9.10 lakh, the Tata Altroz at Rs 5.70-9.46 lakh and the Honda Jazz at Rs 7.55-9.79 lakh. Hyundai, however, updated its i20 last year and the model is currently priced Rs 6.80-10.75 lakh. We believe that Volkswagen should definitely introduce Polo’s new generation to the Indian car market to go up against its rivals.

Expected Prices - ₹ 6-10 Lakhs
Rivals - Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Nexa Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz & Volkswagen Polo.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan returns to the Indian market after a year and features cosmetic updates and feature upgrades over the previous model, along with a new 2.0 TSI petrol engine. Yes, there won’t be any diesel. The headlight design is sharper in the facelift and tapers towards the end, and also features new LED Matrix units. The grille has also been tweaked. The front bumper gets triangular-shaped fog light clusters and slated air intakes.

On the inside, those familiar with the Tiguan AllSpace will find the new Tiguan to be similar. However, the facelift gets a touchscreen interface for the climate control system, instead of rotary knobs and buttons.

Features on the Tiguan include a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, ambient lighting, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, three-zone climate control, an eight-way powered driver’s seat and more. The Tiguan’s facelift will continue to compete against its petrol-powered rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson, Citroen C5 Aircross and the Jeep Compass.

Expected Prices - ₹ 28 Lakhs
Rivals - Citroen C5 Aircross, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Tucson, Isuzu MU-X, Jeep Compass, Mahindra Alturas G4, MG Gloster, Toyota Fortuner & Volkswagen Tiguan All-Space.
