Tesla Supercharger Network Big Upgrade coming ?

One of the biggest electric car manufacturers in the world, Tesla has been working to improve connectivity and charging networks for green vehicles. With more than 25,000 Superchargers globally, Tesla owns and operates the largest global, fast-charging network in the world. Moreover, CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla Superchargers will be accessible to other electric cars as well. Further in this article, we will talk about Tesla’s plan in forming a Tesla Supercharger network for all.

Tesla's plan for Superchargers

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk has talked about opening up his company’s vast Supercharger network to other electric vehicles. Musk had tweeted that Tesla plans to do this later this year and this week, the CEO has finally offered some details about how it might work. It will be “real simple”, Musk claimed on an investor call on Monday. Owners of other EVs will be able to charge at a Supercharger station by using the Tesla app, which right now, is geared towards people who’ve purchased the company’s products. Moreover, Tesla is already committed to opening up a network in Norway by September 2022 but Tesla has a proprietary connector in North America, so non-Tesla vehicles here will need an adapter. That could be up to the other automakers to make. Musk has previously said that Tesla has held talks with other automakers about sharing costs in order to establish the Supercharger network.

The Superchargers currently have two cables on offer, a Type 2 and a CCS. The cables would allow any other electric vehicle supporting those connector types to hook up to the cable and can charge the car with speeds up to 250kW where supported. Last month, German transport minister Andreas Scheuer told the German newspaper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung that he was trying to convince Tesla to open up its network. According to the transport minister, he was in direct talks with the manufacturer to make sure that the current infrastructure will be open to other carmakers and non-Tesla customers as well. However, there has been no word from the CEO on how much the charging will cost to other EV owners using the network.
